Roderick Wright (28 June 1940 – 23 May 2005) wis a Scottish Roman Catholic bishop who served as the Bishop of Argyll and the Isles fae 1990 tae 1996.[1]

Born in the Kingston district o Glesga oan 28 June 1940,[1][2] Wright wis wan o four children o a working-class merchant seaman. His parents wur Andrew 'Andra' Wright and Dolina 'Dolly' MacInnes, who baith came fae the Outer Hebrides: Andrew came fae Eriskay, an Dolina came fae South Boisdale, South Uist. Roddy Wright, as he wis known tae faimily an friends, wis educated at St Gerard's Secondary School in Govan. He began training fur the priesthood at Blairs College in Kincardineshire when he wis fourteen, an went oan tae St Peter's Seminary, Cardross in 1958.[3][4]

Priesthood

Efter Wright wis ordained a priest oan 29 June 1964, his first pastoral appointments wur at St Laurence's Church, Drumchapel, Glesga (1964–1966), an St Jude's Church, Barlanark, Glesga (1966–1969). He returnt tae Blairs College as spiritual director (1969–1974). His next appointment wis as an assistant priest at Oor Lady and St Mun's Dunoon, Argyll (1974–1976). Fur a short while, he acted as a chaplain tae the United States Navy base at Holy Loch. His last three appointments befare his episcopal ordination wur as priest at St Mary's Church, Fort William (1976–1980); St Michael's Church, Ardkenneth, South Uist (1980–1986); and St Anne's Church, Corpach, near Fort William (1986–1991).[3][4]

Episcopate

Wright wis appointit the bishop o the Diocese of Argyll and the Isles by the Holy See on 11 December 1990 an consecrated at St. Columba's Cathedral in Oban oan 15 January 1991. The principal consecrator wis Luigi Barbarito, Titular Archbishop of Fiorentino, Apostolic Pro-Nuncio to Great Britain. The principal co-consecrators wur Cardinal Thomas Winning, Archbishop of Glasgow, an Keith O'Brien, Archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh.[1][3]

Wright disappeared fae his hame next door tae St. Columba's Cathedral, Oban, oan 4 September 1996. Kathleen MacPhee, a divorced mither o three who worked as a nurse in Fort William, vanished at the same time leavin her youngest child wi relatives. There wis concern among local people, includin Frances Shand Kydd, the mither o Diana, Princess o Wales. Wright hud advised Shand-Kydd afore her reception intae the Roman Catholic Church in 1994.[citation needit] The followin weekend, a former parishioner o Wright's came forward tae say that she hud become pregnant by him and hud given birth tae a son in 1981.

Wright resigned as Bishop o Argyll an the Isles oan 19 September 1996 and renoonced the office o bishop.[1]

Wright registered as unemployed an wis spotted lookin fur work in the Jobcentre in Kendal, Cumbria, England.[5] In his autobiography, he alleged that Jobcentre staff hud leakt information aboot him. Wright married MacPhee in a civil ceremony in Antigua in June 1998.[6]

In 2002, Wright an his wife emigrated tae New Zealand. He suffered in his last months fae liver cancer[3] an died oan 23 May 2005, aged 64.[1]
