Placetas is a ceety in the Villa Clara Province in the centre o Cuba; afore the chynge in the kintra's govrenment in 1959 the province wis cried Las Villas. Close touns include Zulueta (tae the north), San Juan de los Remedios (tae the northeast), Cabaiguán an Fomento (tae the east), an Santa Clara an Camajuani (tae the wast). The toun is kent as La Villa de los Laureles acause o its wild laurel trees an aw. Placetas is a municipio an aw, ane o 13 subdiveesions o the Villa Clara Province. Cuba's geographical center, Guaracabuya, is locatit in this municipality.
History
[eedit | eedit soorce]Placetas wis foondit on 9 September 1861 mainly due tae the succar production industrie. Nouadays, the main produce o the aurie is tobacco. The main contribution tae its foondation came frae Jose Martinez-Fortun y Erles, a Spainyie Marques an umwhile colonel in the Spainyie Airmy. The toun is locatit on the Carretera Central road, which cuts through the toun. The toun's position on this road haes alloued it tae serve as a stop for mony travellers. Placetas haes grown considerably ower the years, being declared a toun in 1881 an a ceety in 1925. In 1879 it wis established as its awn municipality.[1] Placetas is kent bi the great carnavals which tak place in Julie an Christmas an New Year's Eve.
Placetas wis the birthplace o Emilio Mola, general an instigator o the Spainyie Ceevil War.
Demographics
[eedit | eedit soorce]In 2004, the municipality o Placetas haed a population o 71,837.[3] Wi a total aurie o 601 km2 (232 sq mi),[2] it haes a population densitie o 119.5/km2 (310/sq mi). The ceety proper haes a population o 42,000.
Placetas is cried, "Villa de los Laureles" due tae the characteristic trees that are plantit in strategic places aroond the toun an aw. The ceety is registered as the place whaur the river Zaza is born, the river runs frae the ootskirts o the toun intae the sea. The river Zaza is currently an environmental preservation aurie. The aurie is primarily a succar producin region, wi three "centrales" succar producin factories. Placetas haes mayor railwey industries that operate frae its aurie an aw. The municipality is dividit intae the barrios o Cabecera, Guaracabulla, Hernando, Nazareno, San Andrés, Sitio Potrero an Tibisial.[1]

The main Catholic kirk in the toun is cried San Atanasio de Placetas, efter the toun's patron saunt. As o 1996, it haed ane library, a main post office, three middle-heich schuils (13 de Marzo, Rodolfo Leon Perlacia an Julio Antonio Mella), ane polis station an mony recreational auries. Maist o the toun's structurs wur built afore the communist govrenment o Fidel Castro, an little o the toun haes been renovatit syne 1959.
