Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Gujarati: મોહનદાસ કરમચંદ ગાંધી; Hindi: मोहनदास करमचंद गांधी; was born on 2 October 1869 and died on 30 January 1948) was prominent political leader of India during the Indian independence movement. He pioneered satyagraha. This is defined as resistance by mass civil disobedience, a philosophy firmly founded upon nonviolence. This concept helped India to gain independence, and inspired movements for civil rights for freedom through out the world. Gandhi is often referred as Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma means "Great Soul". In India he is an also called Bapu means "Father". He is officially honored in India as the Father of the Nation. His birthday, 2 October, is celebrated every year as Gandhi Jayanti, a National holiday, and worldwide as the International day of non- violence. Gandhi was murdered on 30 January 1948 by a Hindu who thocht that he was tied sympathetic with the Muslims. 30 January is celebrated as "Memorial day Archived 2020-09-25 at the Wayback Machine" in India. Gandhi was murdered with 3 bullet shots on the chest.
