The exterior stylin wis based loosely on designer Olivier Boulay's earlier Mitsubishi Space Liner,[2] a monobox fower-seat concept vehicle wi centre-openin "suicide doors", first exhibitit at the 35th Tokyo Motor Show in 2001.[3] It wis the first aw new vehicle featurin the company's new common "face", comprisin a curved lawer grille edge an a sharp crease risin up the leadin edge o the bonnet frae the prominent corporate badge.[4]

The Grandis wis an aa the basis for the Mitsubishi FCV (Fuel Cell Vehicle) concept, pouered bi a fuel cell technology developed bi then controllin sharehaulder DaimlerChrysler. DCX's "FC System" uises a fuel cell stack tae replenish an array o NiMH batteries frae 117 litres o compressed hydrogen storage.[5]

It wan the "Best MPV" awaird at the Bangkok Internaitional Motor Show frae 2005 tae 2010.[6]
