Juviles is a veelage an municipality in the central Alpujarras, in the province o Granada in Spain. The veelage is locatit at 36° 57' north an 3° 13' east, an staunds at a altitude o 1,255 metres, on the road frae Trevélez tae Ugíjar. The municipality haes a aurie o 12 square km, an its population in 2003 wis estimatit at 160.
Awtho tradeetionally agricultural, the aurie unner cultivation in the municipality is nou anerly 35 hectares. Housomeivver, like Trevélez it is kent for its air-cured ham. In Moorish times it wis a centre o the silk industry.
A fortress wis established in Juviles in the 8t century, tho the oreegins o the veelage are probably aulder. It acquired strategic importance durin the Middle Ages, aften servin as a refuge for local fowk in times o ceevil strife. In 913 it was conquered bi Aberramán III. Frae the 12t tae the 16t century the veelage servit as the admeenistrative centre o a "taha" o 12 dounsets wi 23 smawer hamlets associati wi thaim. Follaein the 1500 morisco rebellion, Fernando the Catholic destroyed the fortress as a measur against further revolts; its ruins can still be seen. In 1572, as in ither Alpujarran auries, the remainin morisco population wis replacit bi Christians brocht frae Castile.
