Gagra Destrict is a destrict o Abkhazie.[notes 1] It corresponds tae the Georgie destrict bi the same name. In medieval times, it wis kent as the soothren pairt o Sadzen. It is locatit in the wastren pairt o Abkhazie, an the river Psou serves as a border wi Krasnodar Krai o Roushie. Its caipital is Gagra, the toun bi the same name. The population o the Gagra toun zone in 1989 wis 77,079,[1] but this nummer droppit dramatically follaein the collapse o the Soviet Union an the 1992-1993 war in Abkhazie, (includin the ethnic cleansin o Georgies), tae 37,002 at the time o the 2003 census. Ethnic Armenies nou constitute a plurality in the destrict.

In Dizember 2002, Grigori Enik wis appointit Heid o the State Customs Committee,[2] he wis succeedit bi Valeri Bganba.[3] On 25 Mey 2006, Bganba wis released frae office bi Preses Bagapsh upon his awn request, an succeedit bi Astamur Ketsba.[4] In turn, efter the election o Alexander Ankvab, on 6 September 2011 Ketsba wis dismissed upon his awn request an temporarily replacit bi his deputy Teimuraz Kapba.[5] On 15 November, Grigori Enik, who haed previously heidit the Presidential Admeenistration, wis appointit Actin Heid o Gagra Destrict.[6] On 28 Mey 2012, Enik wis permanently appointit.[7]
