Escherichia coli (/ˌɛʃˈrɪkiə ˈkl/;[1] commonly abbreviatit E. coli) is a Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterium o the genus Escherichia that is commonly foond in the lawer thairm o warm-bluidit organisms (endotherms).[2] Maist E. coli strains are harmless, but some serotypes can cause serious fuid pushionin in thair hosts, an are occasionally responsible for product recalls due tae fuid contamination.[3][4]
