A caravel (Portuguese: caravela, IPA: [kɐɾɐˈvɛlɐ]) is a smaa, heichly maneuverable sailin ship developed in the 15t century bi the Portuguese tae splore alang the Wast African coast an intae the Atlantic Ocean. The lateen sails gave her speed an the capacity for sailin tae windward (beatin). Caravels wur much uised bi the Portuguese for the oceanic exploration voyages during the 15t an 16t centuries in the age o discovery.
