A caliphate (Arabic: خِلافةkhilāfa) is a form of Islamic government led by a caliph (Arabic: خَليفةkhalīfah About this sound pronunciation )—a person considered a political and religious successor to the prophet Muhammad and a leader of the entire Muslim community.[1]
