The name comes frae the inhabitants Taino leid wird Bani, meanin "glen".[4]

The municipality is dividit intae the barrios o Angeles, Berros, Cañadón, Durruthy, Este, Flores, Macabi, Mulas, nuevo Banes ,Oeste, Retrete, Río Seco, Samá (includes Guardalavaca), Marcané, Veguitas an Yaguajay.[1]
