This status endit wi the abolishment o the parish form o organisation in the early 1860s. Kalajoki wis a significant mercat place an controlled the whole regions tar tradin. Bi the end o 19t century the meanin o tar wis diminishin as a guid an the importance o Kalajoki wis reducit thareefter.

The tar trade wis a derivative o the forestry industry, an Kalajoki haes lang been the location o forestry activities. Thare are still sawmills in operation in the ceety the day.
