Xochitepec is a municipio (municipality) o the state o Morelos, in central Mexico. Xochitepec is the name o its principal tounship an seat o the municipal govrenment an aw. It is locatit approximately 13 km (8.1 mi) tae the sooth o the caipital o Morelos, Cuernavaca, on the soothern ootskirts o that ceety's greater metropolitan aurie.
The municipality reportit 53,568 inhabitants in the year 2005 census.
The toponym Xochitepec [ʃot͡ʃi'tepek] comes frae the Nahuatl leid, meanin "on the hill o flouers".
In Juin 2006 a research team frae Mexico's Naitional Institute o Anthropologie an History (INAH) began excavations at Zazacatla, a pre-Columbie Mesoamerican airchaeological steid locatit athin the municipal boondaries. The INAH team led bi Giselle Canto reportit fyndin evidence o Olmec cultural influences at the steid. Prior tae the fynd Olmec-influencit statuar an airchitectur haed been amaist completely unkent for ither steids in the wastren Morelos region, an Zazacatla's excavation represents the strangest evidence yet for some form o trade or contact atween the aurie an the "Olmec heartland" in the Guwf Coast region, some 400 km (249 mi) tae the east.[1]
In Januar 2007 the govrenor o Morelos, Marco Adame Castillo, annooncit an affer for the state tae unnerwrite the preservation o Zazacatla an tae incorporate it intae the tourism an cultural heritage plans for Morelos. He foreshadaeed that a tourism project wad be initiatit at the steid's location in Xochitepec ance the airchaeological investigations haed further developit.[2]
