Overview

Please do not edit Module:Convert because I try to keep that the same on each wiki to make updates easier. If it looks like something needs to be changed, please discuss first because there is probably an alternative.

Later, I will explain how the units (Module:Convert/data) can be changed, but that module also must not be edited because it is generated by running a script.

Please start by editing Module:Convert/text which has lots of text that can be translated. If wanted, just about all text including options can be translated, but it is probably desirable to keep the English options so that any articles with converts that may be copied from en.wiki in the future would work.

Convert/text

The following items are in Module:Convert/text.

SIprefixes: If needed, the symbol and name for each SI prefix can be modified.

customary_units: Can be edited if wanted, but rarely used and could safely be ignored for now.

eng_scales: May need edits, particularly for the "link" text. For example, en:1000000000 (number) is linked at en.wiki if the |lk=on option is used with certain units such as e9J (billion joules).

all_categories: May want to change the categories that are used to track convert errors when invalid input to a convert template is used in an article—by default, errors on other pages do not add a category. Currently en.wiki uses two tracking categories, but experience shows that one would probably be better as after an initial cleanup the categories generally do not contain many articles. I recommend choosing the name for one tracking category and using the same text for both categories in the module.

all_messages: All the text can be edited to control what is displayed if an error occurs. Part of the text is "Help:Convert messages" and that is used as a link in an error message so the editor can get further information. I recommend changing that to ":en:Help:Convert messages" for now (errors will then link to en:Help:Convert messages). Later, the convert messages page can be copied to here and translated, and the link can then point to a page at this wiki.

disp_joins: If wanted, the text on the right-hand side can be translated; the only text that might be changed is " or ". In addition, new lines can be added with wanted text on the left-hand side. Examples on request.

range_types and range_aliases: Can be modified in a manner similar to disp_joins.

en_option_name and en_option_value: Can be modified to define new options in the local language. Let's leave until later.
