A passerine is a bird o the order Passeriformes, which includes mair nor hauf o aw bird species. A notable featur o passerines is the arrangement o thair taes (three pyntin forrit an ane back) which facilitates perchin. Sometimes kent as perchin birds or, less accurately, as sangbirds, the passerines form ane o the maist diverse terrestrial vertebrate orders, wi ower 5,000 identified species.[1] It haes roughly twice as mony species as the lairgest o the mammal orders, the Rodentia. It contains mair nor 110 faimilies, the seicont maist o ony order o vertebrates (efter the Perciformes).

The names "passerines" an "Passeriformes" are derived frae Passer domesticus, the scienteefic name o the eponymous species (the Hoose Sparrow) an ultimately frae the Laitin term passer for Passer sparrows an seemilar smaa birds.
