Izra (Arabic: ازرع Izra') is a toun in Sirie, admeenistratively belangin tae Izra Destrict o the Daraa Govrenorate locatit north o Daraa. Izra' haes an altitude o 599 metres an haed a population o 19,158 in 2004, accordin tae the Sirie Central Bureau o Statistics (CBS).[1] The population is predominantly Christian.
History
[eedit | eedit soorce]In 1596 Izra' appeared in the Ottoman tax registers as Madinat Zura' an wis pairt o the nahiya o Badi Sarma in the Qada o Hauran. It haed a Christian population consistin o 175 hoosehaulds an 61 bachelors, an a Muslim population o 59 hoosehaulds an 30 bachelors. Taxes wur paid on wheat, baurley, goats an/or beehives, watter mill an jizya.[2]
