Ataq (Arabic: عتق‎), alternately spelt Attaq, is a sma ceety an the caipital o Shabwah Govrenorate in Yemen. Ataq is 458 km sooth east o Sana'a. The difference in elevation o the ceety is aboot 70 m wi generally pairtially flat topography wi altitudinal variation in the range o 1120–1190 m.a.s.l. Its population was around 37,315 accordin tae a 2004 census.[1] On 24 Mey 1994, Ataq wis seized bi northren Yemeni forces.[2] Accordin tae the Geo Names Database, Ataq is locatit at an altitude o 1146 metres. It is servit bi Ataq Airport; the landin strip is locatit tae the north o the toun.[1]

Ataq contains the regional museum o the Shabwah Govrenorate, the Shabwa Museum. The museum contains important items relatit tae the prehistoric heritage o the aurie an contains mony items unearthed bi M. L. Inizan.[5] In pairticular it contains relics frae the auncient ceety o Shabwa, the caipital o the auncient kinrick o Hadhramaut an items unearthed frae the airchaeological steids o the auncient Qataban an Osan kinrick.[6]
