History[eedit | eedit soorce]

Muggia oreeginatit as a prehistoric fortifee'd veelage (castelliere), aroond 8t-7t century BC. The territory wis conquered in 178-177 BC bi the Romans, who creatit here a dounset (Castrum Muglae). Efter the faw o the Wastren Roman Empire, Muggia wis unner Ostrogoth, Lombard, Byzantine, Avar an Frank dominations, till, in 931, keeng Hugh o Italy donatit it tae the Patriairch o Aquileia.

Afore the year 1000 a new dounset wis built on the seashore, initially namit the Veelage o the Laurel an then Muglae->Muglia->Mulia->Muia->Muggia (muglia seems tae be a auncient place-name meanin "coastal swamp"). Efter the 13t century the new veelage, nou grown tae the status o ceety, pronooncit itsel a municipality an defined its territory as borderin wi those o Trieste an Koper (Italian Capodistria), but stayed still poleetically boond tae the Patriairchy o Aquileia. Frae this period are the cathedral an the ceety haw, the latter haein been rebuilt in the last century. Haein passed eventually in 1420 unner the Republic o Venice, Muggia shared thareefter the fates o the Serenissima.

Efter the latter's faw in 1797, it became pairt o the Austrian Empire, unner which it developit a important naval shipbiggin industry which flourished till efter Warld War II.

Main sichts[eedit | eedit soorce]

Muggia provides mony evident traces o its Venetian tradeetions an oreegin, as showed bi the dialect, the gastronomic tradeetions, the gothic-venetian style o some hooses, the devious "calli", the loggias, the ogive arches, the auncient coats o airms on the façades but maistly the main square, a true Venetian "campiello".

Memories o its early ages include an important pre-historic "castelliere" on Mt. Castellier (S. Barbara) an Roman (Airchaeological Pairk o Castrum Muglae) an medieval remains in Muggia Vecchia (Auld Muggia), ance ane o the gairdin castles that in the 10t century wur built tae defend the Istrie border against the invasion o the Hungars.

The Castle o Muggia, destroyed in 1353 bi the Triestines, retains several remains o the previous period such as the ruins o the waws. A touer datin back tae 1374 wis due tae the Patriairch o Aquileia Marquard o Muggia. Later in 1735, unner the govrenment o the Republic o Venice, it wis restored, but it wis totally abandoned durin the follaein century. The Castle wis restored bi its current awners, the sculptor Villi Bossi an his wife Gabriella, an mey be visitit upon request.

The maist important airt attraction is the little basilica o Santa Maria Assunta (10t-13t century), hoosin frescoes frae the 14t-15t centuries.
