Amealco is a municipality in the Mexican state o Querétaro. Its name is thought tae mean place o springs in Nahuatl. The municipality seat, an aw cried Amealco, is locatit 63 km sootheast o Santiago de Querétaro. Its elevation is 2,605 meters abuin sea level, an the annual temperatur ranges frae 15 tae 20 °C. It is ane o the auldest settlements o Querétaro, being foondit in 1538 bi Fernando de Tapia (an aw kent as Conín) an Nicolás de San Luis Montañez, who wad an aw foond the State caipital.
In the early 19t century, a group o French an Spainyie entrepreneurs settled in the ceety an began the loggin industry, which at its peak wis ane o the main suppliers o wood tae Mexico Ceety, an an aw exportit wood tae Fraunce an the Unitit States. The govrenments o these twa kintras issued diplomas kept in the Palacio Municipal that certify the quality o Amealco's products.
The Hñähñu or Otomí fowk are concentratit in the soothren and eastren pairts o the municipality, in 34 settlements. The main anes are Santiago Mexquititlán an San Ildefonso Tultepec. They number aroond 20,000 fowk, or 36% o the total population. Amealco is the municipality wi the heichest concentration o indigenous fowk, wi amaist 80% o the State's total.
