Spellin conversion frae English WP tae Scots WP[eedit | eedit soorce]

English WP needs to allow for the two spelling standards in the UK, plus the independent standards of Canada, and the standard of the US.
Scots does not need to emulate the confusion that exists in English.
English words as used in Scots should conform to a UK standard. (Cambridge or Oxford?)

Therefore, commonly occurring words found in English WP articles should move to a UK norm.
There may or may not be a difference between the UK English word and the Scots word.

False analogy[eedit | eedit soorce]

There are a small number of non-conforming derived words:

honorary
honorary, not honourary
humorist
humorist, not humourist

The incorrect form is sometimes used by writers striving to be hypercorrect.

Abbreviations[eedit | eedit soorce]

The UK and North America follow different conventions for abbreviations.
In North America, a period (UK, full stop) follows any abbreviation:

Mister
Mr.
Missus (Mistress)
Mrs.
Saint
St.

The UK now uses a convention that has been in use in French for a very long time.
If the last letter of the abbreviation matches the last letter of the abbreviated word, no period is used. Otherwise, a period is added.
So, in French:

Monsieur
M.

but

Madame
Mme
Mademoiselle
Mlle

Hence, in the UK:

Mister
Mr
Missus
Mrs
Saint
St
