Marsupials are an infraclass o mammals livin primarily in the Soothren Hemisphere. A distinctive characteristic, common tae maist species, is that the young are carried in a pouch. Well-kent marsupials include kangaroos, wallabies, the koala, possums, opossums, wombats an the Tasmanian devil. Less well-kent species o marsupials include the numbat, bandicoots, bettongs, the bilby, quolls an the quokka.

Marsupials represent the clade oreeginatin wi the last common ancestor o extant metatherians. Lik ither mammals in the Metatheria, thay are characterized bi givin birth tae relatively undeveloped young, dften residing in a pouch wi the mither for a certain time efter birth. Close tae 70% o the 334 extant species occur in Australie, New Guinea, an nearby islands, wi the remainin 100 foond in the Americas, primarily in Sooth Americae, but wi 13 in Central Americae, an ane in North Americae north o Mexico.
