Its caipital is Kampong Thom, a picturesque toun on the banks o the Stung Sen River.
Kampong Thom is Cambodia's seicont lairgest province bi aurie. There are a number o significant Angkorian steids in the aurie includin Prasat Sambor Prei Kuk an Prasat Andet temples. Kampong Thom is ane o the provinces that border the Tonle Sap Lake an is in Tonlé Sap Biosphere Reserve.[2]

Kampong Pous Thom (Port o the Great Snake) wis the oreeginal name o the present province called Kampong Thom. The fowk livin aroond this aurie uisually saw these big snakes ivery Buddhist holiday. Time efter that, the snakes disappeared, an the fowk o that aurie cried it Kampong Pous Thom. Then, anerlie short wirds, Kampong Thom came later. Durin the French colony in Cambodie, the French ruled an dividit Cambodie territory intae provinces, an named them accordin tae the spoken wirds o the fowk.
Kampong Thom wis a pouerful caipital in sooth-east Asie durin the Funan period. Kampong Thom haes Prasat Sambor Prei Kuk that wos famous durin the Chenla Era.

Kampong Thom is ane o the lairgest producers o cashew nuts in Cambodie an aw, wi 6,371 hectares unner production in 2003-04.[5]
