Gorgan (Persian: گرگان, Romanisit as Gorgān an Gūrgān an aw; Caspian: Vergen; umwhile, Astarabad (Persian: اَستِر آباد, Romansit as Asterābād an aw),[1] is the caipital o Golestan Province, Iran. It lees approximately 400 km (250 mi) tae the north east o Tehran, some 30 km (19 mi) awa frae the Caspian Sea. At the 2006 census, its population wis 269,226, in 73,702 faimilies.[2]
Some 150 km (93 mi) east o Gorgan is the Golestan Naitional Pairk. The ceety haes a regional airport an several universities. Gorgan Airport wis opened in September 2005.

The ceety wis namit Hyrcanie, Hyrcani or Hyrcana in auncient Greek records, which comes frae Pahlavi Varkâna -- "Laund o the Wouves". Although modren Gorgan is anerlie a ceety an coonty (sharin the same name), auncient Hyrcania wis the name o a greater region on the soothren shores o the Caspian Sea (encompassin aw o the present day Golestan province, as well as some eastren pairts o the Mazandaran province, an some soothren pairts o the present day Republic o Turkmenistan). In modren times an till 1937 the ceety uised tae be kent as Astarabad. Nou it is hame tae a profeesional fitbaa team, Etka FC.
