Aktobe (Kazakh: Ақтөбе / Aqtöbe / اقتٶبه), umwhile kent as Aktyubinsk (Roushie: Актюбинск, till 1999), is a ceety on the Ilek River in Kazakhstan. Wi a population o 277,700, it is the caipital o Aktobe Province. Aktobe haes a mixed ethnic community, includin Kazakhs, Roushies, Ukrainians, Tatars, Uyghurs, Chechens, Armenians, Jews an Greeks. The name "Aktobe" comes frae Kazakh "ақ" (white) an "төбе" (hill); the name is a reference tae the heights on which the oreeginal 19t century settlement wis locatit.
