Merthyr Tydfil (/ˈmɜrθər ˈtɪdvɪl/[1]; Welsh: Merthyr Tudful [ˈmɛrθər ˈtɨːdvɨ̞l]) is a toun in Wales, wi a population o aboot 30,000. Although ance the lairgest toun in Wales, it is nou rankit as the 15t lairgest urban aurie in Wales. It gives its name tae a coonty burgh an aw, which haes a population o aroond 55,000. It is locatit in the historic coonty o Glamorgan. It is aften referred tae simply as 'Merthyr'. The current admeenistrative aurie o the Merthyr County Borough consists o the northren pairt o the Taff Valley an the smawer neighbourin Taff Bargoed Valley.
