The wird Kamphaeng means Wall, an the wird Phet from Sanskrit Vajra meaning diamond (or weapon o Indra). Hence the name o the province literally means Diamond Wall.

The main river o the province is the Ping, ane o the sources o the Chao Phraya river. River flats make up muckle o the east o the province, while the wast is maistly muntains covered wi forests.

Kamphaeng Phet awready wis a ryal ceety in the Sukhothai Kinrick in the 14t century, then kent unner its auld name Chakangrao. It formed an important pairt o the defence seestem o the kinrick, as well as later o the Ayutthaya Kinrick.
