Das Wappentier der Herzöge von Berg, der Bergische Löwe, soll die traditionelle Zugehörigkeit des Kreises zum Bergischen Land dokumentieren. Schloss und Ähre weisen auf charakteristische Wirtschaftszweige im Kreisgebiet hin.
