The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is a UK govrenment research organisation responsible for the development o nuclear fusion pouer. It is an executive non-departmental public body o the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

On its formation in 1954, the authority was responsible for the UK's entire nuclear programme, both civil an defence, as well as the policing o nuclear sites. It made pioneering developments in nuclear fission pouer, overseeing the peaceful development o nuclear technology an performing much scientific research. However, since the early 1970s its areas o wirk have been gradually reduced, with functions transferred tae other govrenment organisations as well as tae the private sector.

The authority now focuses on UK an European fusion pouer research programmes at Culham in Oxfordshire, including the world's most powerful fusion device, the Joint European Torus. The research aims tae develop fusion pouer as a commercially viable, environmentally sound energy source for the future.

It has also been involved in undertaking safety an reliability assessments for outside bodies, due tae its long running experience in such wirk within the nuclear field.
