Twins are twa offspring produced bi the same pregnancy.[1] Twins can be either monozygotic ("identical"), meanin that thay develop frae ane zygote, which splits an forms twa embryos, or dizygotic ("fraternal"), meanin that they develop frae twa different eggs. In fraternal twins, each twin is fertilised bi its own sperm cell.[2]

In contrast, a fetus that develops alane in the womb is cried a singleton, an the general term for ane offspring o a multiple birth is multiple.[3]
