Tianshui (Cheenese: 天水; pinyin: Tiānshuǐ; leeterally: "sky an watter") is the seicont lairgest ceety in Gansu province, Fowkrepublic o Cheenae. Its population is approximately 3,500,000.
Tianshui lies alang the route o the auncient Northren Silk Road at the Wei River, through which much o Sino-Wastren trade occurred.[2] Nearbi are the Maijishan Grottoes filled wi thoosands o Buddhist sculptures, representit bi figurs as Sakyamuni an Avalokitesvara, produced in as early as the Wei Dynasty an as late as the Song Dynasty bi Buddhist monks who first came here via the North Silk Road an, later on, bi local Buddhists, for worship purposes.[3]
The Qin state, later tae acome the foondin dynasty o the Cheenese empire, grew oot frae this aurie, an the Qin name itself is believed tae hae originatit, in pairt, frae thare[4] Qin tombs hae been excavatit frae Fangmatan near Tianshui, includin ane 2200 year auld cairt o Guixian Coonty.[5]
Tianshui is a diocese o the Roman Catholic kirk, currently vacant.[6]
