Teresa Cristina was the dochter of the then-Duke o Calabrie, who later became King Francesco I (Francis I) o the Twa Sicilies. Through her faither, she wis a member o the Bourbons o the Twa Sicilies, also kent as the Bourbons o Naples, the Italian branch o the Spaingie Bourbons. She was a descendant o Fraunce's "Sun Keeng", Louis XIV in the male line through his grandson, Philip V o Spain. Teresa Cristina's mither was the Infanta Doña Maria Isabel o Spain, dochter o King (Charles IV o Spain.

The wedding was held on 30 Mey 1843 in Naples, Pedro II being represented bi his fiancée's brither Prince Leopold, Coont o Syracuse before leaving Naples for Brazil, arriving in Rio de Janeiro on 3 September 1843. Teresa Cristina fell in love with her new husband at first sight. Although a proxy mairiage haed already been performed, an extravagant state wedding wis held on 4 September at the cathedral in Rio de Janeiro.
