Toshiba Type 93 Surface-tae-air missile

The Teep 91 surface-tae-air missile (91式携帯地対空誘導弾, 91-shiki Keitai Chitaikū Yūdōdan) is a Japanese man-portable air-defence seestem. Its appearance is similar tae the US-made FIM-92 Stinger anti-aircraft missile.[3][4] It wis creautit in order tae replace its stock of American-made Stinger MANPADS, since the Teep 91 haes a better guidance seestem, which conseest of baith licht and infrared seestem options.[5] The Stinger, on the ither haund, uises a passive infrareid homing guidance seestem.[6]

In the ranks of the JSDF, the Teep 91 is colloquially kent as Haund Arrow.[7] The Type 91 is sometimes mistaken as a Japanese-made version of the Stinger.[8] The Teep 91 is currently exclusively uised bi the JSDF and haes nae been exportit owerseas tae date due tae previous interpretations of post-war consteetutional restrictions and the laws arising frae them.

The Teep 91 is offeecially treatit as a 4th-generation MANPAD seestem.[9]

Histerie[eedit | eedit soorce]

A JGSDF sodger takes aim with the Teep 91 Kai MANPAD.

Development wirk on an advanced infra-reid seeker bygane in 1979 at the Technical Research and Development Insteetute (TRDI) efter Toshiba and Kawasaki Heivy Industries submittit thair projects with the umwhile being selectit.[10] In 1982, the Japan Sel-Defense Forces bygane luiking for a replacement for the FIM-92 Stinger which wis then in service via Foreign Military Sales.[1][2][11] Development of the missile wis then kent as Keiko or SAM-X wis deferrit until 1987. Toshiba tuik ower the project in 1988 and bygane engineering development. The development wis completit in 1990, and low rate production wis stairtit in 1991.[12] The missile wis initially designatit the Teep 91 Kin-SAM[13] and as the SAM-2.[14][15] It wis first deployed in 1994.[16]

The adoption of the Teep 91 alloued the JSDF tae gradually retire the Stingers, with the last stocks offeecially remuived frae active JGSDF service in 2009.[6] JGSDF Apaches still retain the Stinger as anti-aircraft missiles.[6]

In 2007, the Teep 91 Kai wis deliverit by Toshiba efter being produced tae replace the oreeginal Teep 91 with several impruivements including its motor and capabeelity tae be fired in the dark.[17]

Design[eedit | eedit soorce]

The Type 91 on tap and the Stinger below. These twa MANPADs luik exactly the same at first glance.

The missile is seemilar tae the Stinger missile it replaced with twa rocket solit motors, an initial booster motor and a sustainer.[11] The eemaging seeker uises 3rd generation-made infrareid and ultraviolet guidance seestems.[16] On launch, the missile records the target's eemage profile and is able tae ignore defencive coontermeasures sic as flares.[1][18] The Teep 91's missile travels at a Mach speed of 1.9.[19]

The Teep 91 comes with the rocket launcher, an external battery pack, IFF seestem, missiles and ither training equipment.[20] The Teep 91 weights at 11.5 kilograms, which is lichter than the Stinger as it haes a weight of 15.2 kilograms.[6][21]

Impruivements of the Teep 91 Kai includit missile with image-infra-reid seeker, smokeless motor and the capabeelity tae haeve faster shuiting and target acquiseeition and wis awso impruived for the abeelity tae be uised at night.[10]

Variants[eedit | eedit soorce]

An impruivit version of the Teep 91, called the Teep 91 Kai, wis deliverit tae replace the oreeginal. A vehicle based variant, the Teep 93 Surface-tae-air missile launcher, haes awso been developed. This is awso made bi Toshiba Heivy Industries.[13] The seestem is moontit on Toyota-made Kōkidōshas.[19]
