The Teep 01 LMAT (01式軽対戦車誘導弾, 01-shiki kei-tai-sensha yūdō-dan) is a Japanese man-portable fire-an-forget anti-tank missile. Development began in 1993 at Kawasaki Heavy Industries and wis acceptit intae service in 2001. During development, the missile wis designatit with the codename XATM-5.[4] It wis later kent shortly as the ATM-5.[1]

In the 1st Airborne Brigade, it is uised as its main anti-armor weapon.[5]

Histerie[edit | edit source]

A JGSDF soldier aims the LMAT during a meelitary exercise.

As a replacement wis needit for the Sumitomo FT-84 recoilless rifle in front-line service with the Japanese Ground Sel-Defence Forces,[6] plans tae replace it with an Infrared homing anti-tank missile wis commissioned by the Defense Agency Technical Research and Development Institute. In 1993, Kawasaki Heavy Industries wis selectit tae create the said anti-tank missile seestem. In trials conductit by the JGSDF, the seestem wis kent as the XATM-5. The seestem wis creautit in the same year with live testing in 1996.

Requirements for the seestem includit portability, uisage by a single soldier and design-tae-cost technology.[4]

In 2001, after 11 years, it wis finally placed intae service with the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces as the Type 01 LMAT which translates from Japanese to Type 01 light anti-tank guided missile. A report filed by the Meenistry of Defence in 2005 called for acquisition of an unknown number of 01 LMAT missile seestems among various military items purchased frae Kawasaki Heivy Industries for 129,700,000,000 Yen.[7]

Design[edit | edit source]

The LMAT's missile warheid is tandem HEAT, its twa-stage warheid making it effective against ERA protectit vehicles.[8]

Application[edit | edit source]

The Type 01 LMAT, while uised for infantry in anti-tank roles, can be moontit on the Komatsu LAV for a mobile anti-tank platform.[6]
