The I Tarapacá Region (Spaingie: I Región de Tarapacá) is ane o Chile's 15 regions. It borders the Chilean Arica an Parinacota Region tae the north, Bolivie's Oruro Depairtment on the east, the Antofagasta Region on the sooth an the Paceefic Ocean on the wast. The port ceety o Iquique (2002 pop. 216,419) is the region's caipital.
Hintle o the region wis ance a Peruvian province, which wis annexed bi Chile unner the 1883 Treaty o Ancón at the close o the War o the Paceefic. The region wis important economically as a steid o intense saltpeper minin, afore synthetic nitrate manufacturin became possible. A nummer o abandoned minin touns can still be foond in the region.
The present day Tarapacá Region wis creatit in 2007 bi subdividin the umwhile Tarapacá Region unner Law 20.175, which wis signed bi Preses Michelle Bachelet in Arica.[2]

The govrenment o the region resides in the intendant, who is assigned bi the preses. Each o the region's twa provinces are faur subdividit intae communes.

A desert climate dominates the region. Near the coast, cloudiness can leemit the temperatur swing throughoot the day, but in ither drier auries, temperaturs can vary greatly as is teepical in deserts. A marginal desert region can be foond ower 3,000 m (9,843 ft) abuin sea level, which sees milder temperaturs an simmer rains.[2]
