Sha (Ш ш; italics: Ш ш) is a letter o the Glagolitic an Cyrillic script. It commonly represents the voiceless postalveolar fricative /ʃ/, like the pronunciation o ⟨sh⟩ in "sheep" or the somewhat similar voiceless retroflex fricative /ʂ/ in Roushie. Mair precisely, the soond in Roushie denotit bi <ш> is commonly transcribit as a palato-alveolar fricative but is actually a voiceless retroflex fricative. It is uised in every variation o the Cyrillic alphabet, for Slavic an non-Slavic leids.

In Inglis, Sha is romanized as ⟨sh⟩ or as ⟨š⟩, the latter bein the equivalent letter in the Latin alphabets o Czech, Slovak, Slovene, Croatie, Latvie an Lithuanie.

History[eedit | eedit soorce]

Sha haes its earliest origins in Phoenician Shin an is linked closely to Shin's Greek equivalent: Sigma (Σ, σ, ς). (Note the similar form of the modern Hebrew Shin (ש), which is probably the origin o this letter, derivin frae the same Proto-Canaanite soorce). Sha already possessed its current fairm in Saunts Cyril an Methodius's Glagolitic alphabet. Maist Cyrillic letter-fairms wur derived frae the Greek, but as thare wis na Greek sign for the Sha soond (modren Greek uises simply "Σ/σ/ς" tae spell the sh-soond in foreign wirds and names), Glagolitic Sha wis adoptit unchynged. Thare is a possibility that Sha wis taken frae the Coptic alphabet, which wis the same as the Greek alphabet but haed a few letters addit at the end, includin ane cried "shai" which somewhat resembles baith sha an shcha (Щ, щ) in appearance.

Uise in mathematics[eedit | eedit soorce]

Ш haes the distinction o bein the anly distinctly Cyrillic letter internaitionally uised in mathematics:

In algebraic geometry, the Tate–Shafarevich group o an Abelian variety A ower a field K is denotit Ш(A/K), a notation first suggestit bi J. W. S. Cassels. (Previously it haed been unimaginatively denotit TS.)

In a different mathematical context, some authors allude tae the shape o the letter Sha when thay uise the term Shah function for what is itherwise cried a Dirac comb.

The shuffle product is eften denotit bi ш.
