The concept o the Mechanical Horse tractor unit wi an easily detached articulated trailer wis conceived in the early 1930s bi Napier & Son. The London and North Eastern Railway haed approached Napier's, the quality car and aero-ingine makers for an answer tae the problem o replacing horse for local haulage purposes, while retaining the flexibility o changing the wagons an the manoeuvrability o the horse and wagon. In 1933 Scammell Lorries Ltd purchased the three wheeled tractor unit design frae the Napier Company and promptly turned it intae the famous Mechanical Horse. It wis later succeeded bi the Scammell Scarab.
