Laos is dividit intae provinces (Lao ແຂວງ, khoeng, qwang or khoueng) an 1 prefecture (kampheng nakhon) plus the Vientiane Caipital ceety municipality (ນະຄອນຫຼວງ, nakhon louang, or Na Kone Luang Vientiane). The special administrative zone (ເຂດພິເສດ, khet phiset) Xaisomboun creatit in 1994 wis dissolved on 13 Januar 2006. [1]

The population o each province in 2005 is gien in the census data, [3] rangin frae the lairgest (Savannakhet) tae smawest (Sekong).

History

In 1989 Vientiane prefecture wis split frae Vientiane province an the caipital o Vientiane province moved frae Vientiane tae Muang Phôn-Hông. In 1994 Xaisômboun khetphiset (special region) wis formed frae pairts o Bolikhamxai, Vientiane, an Xiangkhoang provinces. In 2006 Xaisomboun special region wis dissolved an the Longsan, Xaysomboun, Phun, an Hom destricts addit tae Vientiane province, while Thathon destrict wis transferred tae Xiengkhuang province.

The provinces are grouped geographically intae 3 strata, North (frae Phongsaly tae Saiyabouly, Luang Prabang an Xiengkhuang), Central (Vientiane and Bolikhamxay) Sooth (frae Khammuane tae Champasack).
