Like Marie Antoinette, the Princess o Lamballe wis guillotined in the French Revolution. She is known to history as the "Princesse de Lamballe". She wis a sister-in-law o Louise Marie Adélaïde de Bourbon[2] She wis a descendant o Jeanne Baptiste d'Albert.

Background[eedit | eedit soorce]

Born in Turin, she was a daughter o Louis Victor o Savoy (The "Prince o Carignano")[3] an Christine o Hesse-Rotenburg, she wis born a "Princess o the Duchy o Savoy". She wis a distant cousin o Prince Eugene o Savoy.

Marriage[eedit | eedit soorce]

Referred to Mademoiselle de Carignan in Fraunce, prior to her marriage, she wis betrothed to Louis Alexandre de Bourbon, Prince o Lamballe (prince de Lamballe). The Prince o Lamballe wis the eldest son an heir o the Duke o Penthièvre[4]. Lamballe an Princess Marie Louise married bi proxy on 17 Januar 1767 then on the 31 Januar in person. The couple lived in Paris at the Hôtel de Toulouse. The Prince had several mistresses an the couple would have no children before the Prince o Lamballe died 6 Mey 1768 due to Sexually transmittit diseases. The widowed Princess o Lamballe inherited part o his fortune making her a wealthy woman in her own right.

Name[eedit | eedit soorce]

She used the names "Maria Luisa' or "Marie Louise" in French. As a daughter of the Prince o Carignan, she is often incorrectly given the surname o Savoy-Carignan. That is incorrect as she wis born a princess of the Duchy o Savoy and a daughter of a Prince o Carignan. The title wis merely a courtesy title having no legal jurisdiction over Carignan which wis known in Italian: Carignano, an French: Carignan in French.

Notes[eedit | eedit soorce]

  1. "Marie Louise Thérèse de Savoie" in French
  2. Wife o the future Philippe Égalité who wis executed in the French Revolution.
  3. The same line o the Hoose o Savoy as Prince Eugene o Savoy.
