Pepsin is an enzyme whose zymogen (pepsinogen) is released bi the chief cells in the painch an that degrades fuid proteins intae peptides. It wis discovered in 1836 bi Theodor Schwann who an aa coined its name frae the Greek wird πέψις pepsis, meanin "digestion" (frae πέπτειν peptein "tae digest").[1][2][3][4]
