An orphant (frae the Greek ορφανός orfanós[1]) is a bairn whase parents are deid or hae abandoned them permanently.[2][3] In common uisage, anly a bairn wha haes lost baith parents due tae daith is cried an orphant. When referrin tae ainimals, anly the mither's condeetion is uisually relevant. If she haes gane, the offspring is an orphant, regairdless o the faither's condeetion.[4]
