Orogeny refers tae forces an events leading tae a lairge structural deformation o the Yird's lithosphere (crust an uppermaist mantle) due tae the engagement o tectonic plates. Response tae such engagement results in the furmation o lang tracts o heichly deformed rock cried orogens or orogenic belts. The wird "orogeny" comes frae the Greek (oros for "muntain" plus genesis for "creation" or "origin"),[1] an it is the primary mechanism bi which muntains are biggit on continents. Orogens develop while a continental plate is crumpled an is pushed upwards tae furm muntain ranges, an involve a great range o geological processes collectively cried orogenesis.[2][3]
