# Naitural nummer

Naitural nummers can be uised for coonting (ane aiple, twa aiples, three aiples, ...)

In mathematics, the naitural nummers are those uised for coontin ("thare are sax coins on the table") an orderin ("this is the third lairgest ceety in the kintra"). These purposes are relatit tae the lingueestic notions o cardinal an ordinal nummers, respectively (see Inglis numerals). A later notion is that o a nominal nummer, which is uised anly for namin.

Properties o the naitural nummers relatit tae divisibility, such as the distribution o prime nummers, are studied in nummer theory. Problems concernin coontin an orderin, such as partition enumeration, are studied in combinatorics.

Thare is na universal agreement aboot whether tae include zero in the set o naitural numbers: some define the naitural nummers tae be the positive integers {1, 2, 3, ...}, while for ithers the term designates the non-negative integers {0, 1, 2, 3, ...}. The umwhile defineetion is the tradeetional ane, wi the latter defineetion havin first appeared in the 19t century.
