The libretto is based on biblical stories frae the Beuk o Jeremiah an the Beuk o Daniel an the 1836 play bi Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois an Francis Cornue, awtho Antonio Cortese's ballet adaptation o the play (wi its necessary simplifications), gien at La Scala in 1836, wis a mair important soorce for Solera nor the play itsel.[1] Unner its oreeginal name o Nabucodonosor, the opera wis first performed at La Scala in Milan on 9 Mairch 1842.
