Munt Pico (Portuguese: Montanha do Pico) is a stratovolcano locatit on Pico Island, in the mid-Atlantic archipelago o the Azores. It is the heichest moontain o Portugal, at 2,351 metres (7,713 ft) abuin sea level, an is ane o the heichest Atlantic moontains; it is mair than twice the elevation o ony ither peak in the Azores.

History[eedit | eedit soorce]

Historical eruptions o Pico hae occurred frae vents on its flanks rather than the summit crater. In 1562–64, an eruption on the sootheast flank produced lava flows which reached the sea. Anither flank eruption in 1718 awso produced flows which reached the coast. The maist recent eruption occurred in December 1720.

On 29 September 2009 thare wur reports frae local news sources that indicatit that a fumarole existin at the pinnacle o the moontain (Piquinho) began emittin volcanic gas. The region's seismic an volcanological monitorin centre (Portuguese: CIVISA Centro de Informação e Vigilância Sismovulcânica dos Açores) indicatit that the phenomenon occurred in the early morning, turnin intense an veesible in various pynts throuoot the island an frae Faial. Awtho the event resultit frae exceptional meteorological condeetions an wis visible in the Central Group, thare wis nae liberation o anomalous volcanic gases an aw ither parameters fell athin norms.
