The moment magnitude scale (abbreviatit as MMS; denotit as MW or M) is uised bi seismologists tae measure the size o yirdquauks in terms o the energy released.[1] The magnitude is based on the seismic moment o the yirdquauk, which is equal tae the rigidity o the Yird multiplied bi the average amoont o slip on the faut an the size o the aurie that slipped.[2]
