Bi birth, she wis a Princess an Duchess o Bavarie as the daughter o Charles VII, Haly Roman Emperor, Elector o Bavarie, an Airchduchess Maria Amalia o Austrick.

Maria Josepha wis first mairit bi proxy on 13 Januar 1765, tae her second cousin, the widowed Joseph, Keeng o the Romans, an heir o Empress Maria Theresa o Austrick in Munich, Germany. Upon her arrival tae Vienna frae Munich, her husband did not seem tae be dissatisfied with his new wife an neither did the entourage who greeted the princess. She an Joseph formally mairit on 25 Januar 1765, at the Schönbrunn Pailace in Vienna, amidst suitable festivities.
