It wis biggit in Prussia bi the Teutonic Knichts, a German Roman Catholic releegious order o crusaders, in a furm o an Ordensburg fortress. The Order named it Marienburg (Mary's Castle). The toun which grew aroond it wis an aa named Marienburg.

The castle is a classic example o a medieval fortress an, on its completion in 1406, wis the warld's lairgest brick castle. UNESCO designatit the "Castle o the Teutonic Order in Malbork" an the Malbork Castle Museum as the Warld Heritage Steid in December 1997. It is ane o twa Warld Heritage Steids in the region wi origins in the Teutonic Order. The ither is the "Medieval Toun o Toruń", foondit in 1231 as the steid o the castle Thorn (Toruń).
