The lithosphere (Auncient Greek: λίθος [lithos] for "rocky", an σφαῖρα [sphaira] for "sphere") is the rigid[1] ootermaist shell o a rocky planet defined on the basis o the mechanical properties. On Yird, it comprises the crust an the portion o the upper mantle that behaves elastically on time scales o thoosands o years or greater. The ootermaist shell o a rocky planet defined on the basis o the chemistry an mineralogy is a crust.
