The paper furst appeared in Lille in Aprile 1941 at a time whan the region o Nord-Pas-de-Calais wis bein ruled bi a German military govrenment in Brussels.[2] The newspaper's tag-line descrieved itsel as the "Reseestance organ o French Flanders."[2]
The post-war version the paper is pairt o the Belgian company, Rossel group, that forby awns the major Belgian newspaper Le Soir, that it boucht frae Socpresse in 2006.
Oreegins in Occupied Fraunce
[eedit | edit soorce]La Voix du Nord is a clandestine newspaper that gae rise tae a muivement o poleetical reseestance. The reseestance group wis cried Voix du Nord ("Vyce o the North"—o Fraunce, or, "Vyce o the Nord"—a French depairtment). Saxty-five unit o the furst issue o the newspaper wis prentit, dated Aprile 1941. It clearly annoonced the newspaper's mission statement:
The newspaper affirmit its support fur General de Gaulle an its opposeetion tae the Vichy govrenment. At the ootset, thay wur twa vera different men: Jules Noutour, polis brigadier, tred unionist, an socialist memmer o the SFIO pairty; jynt bi Natalis Dumez, social Catholic. Dumez wis the hert an soul o the editorial staff: she wis primarily reponsible fur the fower hunder airticles that appeared in the furst 39 issues. Noutour wis arrestit on 8 September 1943 an deportit tae Gross Rosen, whaur he dee'd 1 Februar 1945.
Frae the fower Roneotyped pages o the furst day, the newspaper rapidly grew tae sax, an then ten pages. Owin tae the difficulties in obtainin supplies o paper, the page coont was later reduced tae fower pages in Februar 1943. Circulation wis aroond 900 unit initially, growin tae 15,000 in Januar 1943. The paper cam oot ivery twa weeks throu September 1942, an monthly frae 1943 on.
The last twa issues wis published in Julie an August 1944 unner the responsibility o Jules Houcke, wha published the furst appenly distributit issue o "La Voix du Nord" on 5 September 1944. The furst page is crossed oot, wi a heidline spannin sax columns: "The Northren Region is free. Freedom an unthirldom wur purchased at a heich price: preeson, tortur, daith camps fur mair nor 530 fowk, wha wrate, prentit, an distributit thir newspapers."
Modren
[eedit | edit soorce]Efter the war, the paper wis reborn as a hybrid pairtnership an limited liability company "La Voix du Nord - Houcke an Company". Thay teuk ower the premises o the Grand Écho du Nord, an as wis the habit elsewhaur in Fraunce, thay kept the staff on as weel, an it wis thay wha produced the aulder newspaper o the Reseestance. Fur the oreeginal jurnalists wha wur actually pairt o the Reseestance an merkitly the twa co-foonders wha haed nae yit returned frae deportation abroad in Februar 1945, it wis a betrayal bi pseudo-Reseestance memmers. The skares o the new company rose in 1945, the oreeginal awners an memmers wur priced oot, an it teuk thirty year o litigation afore thay achieved success. In the 1950s, the paper stairtit prentin mony local editions, giein it a regional kiverage.
Voix du Nord is published in tabloid. The paper sponsors the Grand Prix de Fourmies bicycle race.
