Kem (Roushie: Кемь; Karelie: Kemi; Finnish: Vienan Kemi) is a historic toun an the admeenistrative centre o Kemsky Destrict o the Republic o Karelie, Roushie, locatit on the shores o the White Sea whaur the Kem River enters it, on the railwey leadin frae Petrozavodsk tae Murmansk. Population: 13,051 (2010 Census);[1] 14,620 (2002 Census);[5] 18,522 (1989 Census).[6]

Kem wis first mentioned as a demesne o the Novgorod posadnik Marfa Boretskaya in 1450, when she donatit it tae the Solovetsky Monastery (situatit in the White Sea several kilometres aff shore). In 1657, a firthen fort wis erectit thare.
An aw firthen is the toun's remarkable cathedral, biggit in 1711–1717. It is a fine example o the tented roof-construction sae popular in auld Roushie airchitectur. The cathedral's iconostasis featurs precious 17t-century century icons frae Novgorod.
Toun status wis grantit tae Kem in 1785.
On 10 Aprile 1918 the toun wis reached bi Finnish troops durin the Viena expedition in an attempt tae join White Karelie tae Finland.
Kem wis uised as depairtur place for boats heidit tae Solovki carryin poleetical preesoners frae 1926 tae 1939. Durin the Cauld War, the toun haes been the steid o Poduzhemye air base, a key interceptor aircraft airfield coverin Karelie.
