Johann Ernst IV, Duke o Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (22 August 1658 – 17 Februar 1729) was a duke o Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld.

Life[eedit | eedit soorce]

He wis a son o Ernst I, Duke o Saxe-Gotha an Princess Elisabeth Sophie o Saxe-Altenburg.

After the daith o his faither in 1675, Johann Ernest initially governed the duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, jointly with his six older brithers, as set out in their faither's will. However, in 1680, the brithers concluded a treaty dividing the paternal lands an Johann Ernst became duke o Saxe-Saalfeld, with the touns o Gräfenthal, Probstzella an Pössneck. As he wis the youngest, he kept the smallest portion o lands.

Johann Ernest an his brither Ernst soon found themselves financially overstretched as a result of the partition (the income o their eldest brither, Friedrich, far exceeded the income of Johann Ernest), an they both made a protest. Over the following years, the controversy continued and increased, as their aulder brithers Albert o Saxe-Coburg, Henry o Saxe-Römhild an Christian o Saxe-Eisenberg died without male heirs. During these years, Johann Ernst took possession o Coburg (in 1699), Römhild an 5/12 o Themar (in 1714).

The "Coburg-Eisenberg-Römhilder Erbstreit" was finally resolved (efter repeated intervention and arbitration bi the emperor) in 1735, six years after the daith o Johann Ernest. His descendants retained Coburg. The decision wis generally accepted, maist importantly bi the descendants o his aulder brither Bernhard, wha also haed a claim tae Coburg.
